Flash floods to menace networks

The latest version of the world’s most widely used software is set to cause discomfort for network managers and even train passengers.
Software publisher Macromedia has launched Studio 8, the latest update of its portfolio of software packages, including enhanced versions of Dreamweaver, Fireworks and FlashPaper.
Product manager Jennifer Taylor explained that latest release of Flash Professional 8, a tool for creating rich media and video, is likely to have the greatest impact on networking and telecoms managers.
“With Flash 8 we’ve made it incredibly easy to publish broadcast quality video,” she said. “We’ve increased the quality of video, and turned the interface into a two-click process.”
Taylor admitted that this will create a potentially huge increase in the number of users who will create and send videos, so causing a strain on corporate networks.
Asked whether Macromedia is happy with this situation, Taylor dismissed it as a user problem. “With power comes responsibility,” she insisted.
Meanwhile a new version of Flash Lite, the cut down version of Flash aimed at mobile devices, threatens further tyranny.
Taylor admitted that the availability to mobile phones of Breeze, Macromedia’s online meeting technology, could make public travel even more unpleasant.
“Yes, it’s true, mobile phone users could start to hold virtual meetings on the train,” she said.
So be warned, noisy mobile phone pests could soon have a new catch-phrase: ” Hello, I’m on the train, in a meeting!”
